April is the official start of Dallas Arts Month and National Poetry Month. Of course the City of Dallas had to recognize it with a festive kickoff Thursday at the Latino Cultural Center.

Dallas Arts Month first debuted in 2013 and is designed to increase resident awareness, encourage participation, and appreciation for the experiences Dallas artists and organizations create throughout the city.

The kick-off event featured live performances by Coyote Rock, Reuben Lael, and Mitotiliztli Yaoyollohtli.

"Dallas Arts Month is our chance to celebrate the talent that makes this city extraordinary, and this year, we get to share it with the world,” said District 3 Council member, Zarin Gracey. “I'm proud to represent a district that sits at the heart of Dallas's creative community, and I can't wait for what April has in store."

Also, CEO of Arete Health Byron Sanders introduced the insurance the company offers to the audience. The insurance is in partnership with the Dallas Music Office and provides artists and creatives performing freelance or contract work with a health plan called Creatives Care Dallas for $65/month.

"Dallas Arts Month highlights our flourishing arts ecosystem by amplifying collaboration between artists, organizations, and community members,” said Office of Arts and Culture Director Martine Elyse Philippe. “Our citywide celebration shines a light on the vibrant creativity that makes Dallas a cultural hub. Throughout the month, residents and visitors can experience and enjoy a range of cultural arts activities taking place across the city.”
