The long-awaited revival of Forest Theater in Dallas

Forest Theater in South Dallas, for the first time in 50 years, will have its tower lit once again during a celebration event on November 1, 2026.

The historic theater has had it's share of famous performances and revamps. Now it's led by the nonprofit Forest Forward, an organization focused on neighborhood revitalization, educational opportunities for kids, and restoration of Forest Theater.

Just this past August, there was an unveiling for For The Culture, a public permanent art installation by artist Jessica Bell at the theater's outdoor Constantin Corner. According to a Forest Forward post, "the installation celebrates the creativity, legacy and people of South Dallas."

Almost 70 community members, city officials, community advocates, and more came out to witness the installation.

If you didn't already know, 77-year-old Forest Theater has called South Dallas home since it first opened in the city of Dallas in 1949, constructed by Karl Hobitzelle. It quickly became a hub for community and entertainment among the local Black community in the 1950s.

Notable acts ranged from Prince to Gladys Knight, to Dallas icon Erykah Badu. Then, the theater closed after a few years and Badu reopened it in 2003, calling it the Black Forest Theater.

It closed again in 2008 and remained dormant for years up until recently around 2024. The renovation aims to add a coffee shop, two performance halls, rooftop, and other ammenities.

The Grand Return celebration in November will feature an evening of entertainment, vendors, food trucks, and lighting of the tower and marquee.
