Juneteenth falls on a Friday this year, but there are events and activities celebrating the holiday that are happening all week.
The holiday, which falls on June 19 annually, commemorates news of the emancipation of slaves reaching Galveston, Texas in 1865 following the Civil War. That was two years following the emancipation Proclamation.
African Americans primarily celebrate the holiday with reunions, festivals, and other activities. Originally a holiday recognized mainly in Texas, It was made a national U.S. holiday in 2021.

Dallas Southern Pride Festival
This is slated to host a whole weekend of events starting Thursday, June 18. There will be a health symposium, hip hop workout, rooftop day party and welcome reception, and more. Tickets range from free to $475 depending on which dates and events you choose.
Urban Collective is partnering with Hennessy for a BLK on Bishop block party featuring seven DJs, art, food. June 19 from 5 pm - midnight. Tickets are $23.
The Duncanville coffee shop will have a day of reading, community, and education. Local artists will read to children, perform on the open mic, and there will be food and drinks. Free to attend from 10 am -12 pm.
6th Annual Dallas Juneteenth Festival
This fest will feature 20 different food vendors from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and surrounding states. There will be several small business vendors including clothing, accessories, jewelry, bath & body, men's wear, and health. The Dallas Juneteenth Festival, curated by Clara Igwala-Anumege and presented by Elite Community Outreach, is a vibrant, family-friendly celebration honoring African American freedom, heritage, and culture. June 20 at 12 pm. Early tickets are free.
Freedom Vibes at the National Juneteenth Museum in Fort Worth
The festival will support the museum’s program footprint and capital campaign, and elevate its brand profile to new heights. The museum will serve as a comprehensive learning center, and events like Freedom Vibes provide critical pre-opening programs and content as Juneteenth awareness continues to expand globally. Urban Trivia has partnered with the City of Plano to bring you their trivia experience to McCall Plaza on June 19. There will be a DJ, prizes, and competitive fun trivia. Free to attend and lasts from 7-10 pm.
Dr. Opal Lee will complete her annual 2.5 mile walk to recognize the 2.5 years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach the enslaved people in Texas.
Unity Unlimited and Lee continue her walks to educate the nation on the importance of freedom. She has led the charge to establish Juneteenth as a National Day of Observance for decades. Opal Lee’s vision of Juneteenth has grown from a single day community picnic to a multi-day celebration that includes a parade, 5K, and more. June 19 starting at 9 am at Will Rogers Square in Fort Worth.

Dallas Arts District Pride Block Party
This isn't specifically Juneteenth, but it is on the same day as the holiday and features Black music performances! Dallas Arts District partners with the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Crow Museum of Asian Art. It consists of a night filled with regional and Dallas artists, Roundup Saloon Line Dancing, gourmet food-fare, artist-makers, a community mural, and family-friendly activities. Featured performers include Cure for Paranoia, Dezi 5, and Kamica King. There will even be a film screening with the Dallas Black Queer Collective at the DMA.
